Prompt Writing Guide: Get Better Answers From Any AI Tool

Updated 2026-10-25 · 8 min read · AI Tools World editorial team

The quality of an AI answer depends heavily on the request. You do not need secret “magic prompts” — you need to give the same information a capable human assistant would need to do the job well.

The 5-part prompt formula

  • Role or context: who the answer is for and the situation.
  • Task: exactly what you want produced.
  • Input: the text, data or file to work with.
  • Constraints: length, tone, format, things to avoid.
  • Example: a short sample of the style or structure you want (optional but powerful).

Before and after: writing

Weak prompt

Write an email to my boss.

Better prompt

Write a polite, short email (under 120 words) to my manager asking to move Thursday's 3 pm project review to Friday morning because a client call was scheduled at the same time. Offer two time options and keep a professional, friendly tone.

Before and after: research

Weak prompt

Tell me about solar panels.

Better prompt

I am a homeowner comparing rooftop solar panels. Explain in simple language the difference between monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels, what affects payback time, and list five questions I should ask an installer. Use headings and keep it under 400 words.

Before and after: images

Weak prompt

A logo for my bakery.

Better prompt

A flat, minimal logo for a family bakery called “Noor Bakes”: a simple wheat stalk forming a crescent, warm brown and cream colours, clean sans-serif text, white background, suitable for a shop sign and Instagram profile.

Before and after: coding

Weak prompt

Fix my code.

Better prompt

This React component re-renders every second and the input loses focus while typing. Explain the cause and give a corrected version. Keep the same props and do not add new libraries. [paste code]

Iterate instead of starting over

Treat the first answer as a draft. Follow up with specific edits: “make the second paragraph shorter”, “use simpler words”, “add a table comparing the three options”. This is faster than rewriting the whole prompt.

Ask the AI to check itself

  • “List any assumptions you made.”
  • “Which parts of this answer are you least sure about?”
  • “Give sources I can verify for each factual claim.”
Tip: Even with sources, open and read them. AI can attach a real link to a claim the page does not actually support.

Frequently asked questions

Do prompts work the same in every AI tool?

The formula works everywhere, but results differ by model. Save prompts that work well and reuse them as templates.

Can I write prompts in Urdu, Arabic or Hindi?

Yes. Most major assistants understand these languages. For best results, state the language and script you want in the answer.
